Bringing Play into Your Witchcraft
While we gain more experience in the world of witchcraft, it is easy to start getting really heady and take ourselves a bit too seriously. Sometimes we can paint ourselves into a corner with what we should or shouldn’t be doing. Dogma is hard to escape with any practice, so I thought it would be a fun departure from the heavy rhetoric, and engage in some silliness. I know we could all use a break!
I find that play can actually help raise the energy of spell work with laughter, giggles, and awe. When we get out of our comfort zones, it can help us to drop our boundaries and cross the hedgerow of our personal hang-ups. This is great because it allows us to access our inner child and by-pass the ego. Super important for healing, right!?
Right.
So these ideas can be incorporated in spells differently than I suggest, but they are just some fun ideas to add something new to your craft and get your brain flowing. If you try any of these, be sure to tag me! I would love to see what you come up with!!
Green Heart Fire
This baby is borderline stage magic, but hear me out! Sometimes the theater of ritual helps us to get in the right headspace, and sympathetic magick is known to work wonders. This is more of an act of wonder than silliness, but our Green Heart Fire is something that will make you feel super witchy -like a cartoon witch, cackling over your hell fire!
Before getting into it, I want to mention something really important: FIRE SAFETY. This can be a dangerous ritual to perform inside. Seriously. Don’t try this if you’ve been in any way inebriated, or in altered states of consciousness. Make sure to perform this in a well ventilated area with several windows open. Only do this on a fire safe surface like metal or ceramic, and you need to have a lid handy, or a fire blanket, bucket of sand, or water. Be safe. We are not responsible if you set your house on fire (that wouldn’t be good for anyone!!). Never add additional fuel to a flame, you risk causing an explosion.
This ritual can also be adapted to work with a bonfire outside, and is super fun during camping trips. Just add some of the chemicals into your coals!
Alright - now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s make some magick!
Gather:
Lighter
Boric acid (Or Borax - the ant killer)
Fire Proof bowl/cauldron with lid
Fuel (For best results use methylated spirits or denatured alcohol - you can also use Isopropyl with a lesser degree of success) (If using a campfire, omit this)
Ritual:
You can adapt this fire to be used with any ritual, but I really felt that this flame called to the heart chakra, so that is what this will focus on. Green is a color that represents the heart chakra and fire represents passion. Here we will literally be igniting your heart with passion.
After gathering your ingredients, call in your guides/cast your circle if you feel called to do so. Take your boric acid and try to shape it into a heart in the bottom of your fire-proof cauldron or bowl. Its ok if it doesn’t look perfect! The intention is what matters. While you have this shape in front of you, focus on the parts of your heart that need attention. These are your passions, your creative energy, your lovers, your community. Whatever you want to ignite, speak these things aloud now. After you have said your intent, grab your lighter (being careful of any loose hair or clothing!!) and spark your Green Heart Fire. As the flame engulfs your heart, continue to focus on your intentions.
Now is the perfect time to begin fire scrying, if you see any shapes that stand out to you be sure to make note of them. Write your intentions down as well, so you can keep track of them and continue to add power to them as need be.
Be sure to take some time to marvel at what a badass witch you are for using green fire in your spell work. Everyone is jealous of your skills. Show your kids. Show your partner. Terrify your neighbors and roommates. Now is the time!! Be sure to add in a few good cackles while you’re at it! Embrace your inner witch.
This spell is best performed on the new moon, in darkness.
Re-ignite Your Magick
Another fire spell!
Hey, I am a sagittarius, but also - I love to play with fire. I think a lot of witches do! Anyways, this is a great low effort spell. It literally only requires 3 things, You, a candle, and a lighter. No need to run to the botanica for exotic ingredients. Most of us have this stuff on hand already. Candle color is not important (unless you want it to be)! You can even use a birthday candle or a tea light.
Ritual:
Get your candle and lighter, cleanse them in your favorite way. Allow yourself to ground and center. Light your candle. This represents yourself and your practice. Let the flame get established while focusing on the parts of your magick that feel dormant. Allow this energy to swirl around in your brain and once you feel its at its peak, grab your lighter and blow your candle out. Immediately take your lighter with a flame and bring it into the smoke of the candle flame. This should cause the candle to re-ignite. As this happens speak aloud the things you wish to re-ignite. You can do this as many times as you like.
This spell is great for times of low energy, and requires pretty much no preparation. Its simple and fun. Go play with fire!
Drawing Your Shadow
Shadow work is one of those things a lot of folks have a hard time wrapping their heads around. I did for the longest time. This is a fun way to help take your ego out of the mix and get directly to your unconscious mind.
Gather:
Paper
Drawing implements
Ritual:
Bring yourself to a place that is comfortable, where you can relax without distractions. Put on some music you enjoy, light a candle or some incense. This is meant to be a safe space, you don’t have to cast a formal circle or call on anything other than yourself.
Focus your attention on whatever issue you are looking for guidance on. Sometimes when I get really anxious and I can’t find the cause, this helps to draw out the unconscious worry. Begin to draw without any attention being paid to the outcome. Form lines and doodle, allow your mind to explore and wander.
Once shapes start to fill your page, look at them with an open heart and begin to turn them into more solid forms. Let your lines tell you what they want to become. Be free and don’t attempt to focus too hard on making anything “beautiful”, just allow the shapes and lines to pour onto the page before you. If you feel like scribbling, do so. Or if you have winding anxiety, draw spirals until they lead you to another portion of the page.
The point here is to continue the act of moving your implement around on the page until you feel satisfied. Follow your emotions and don’t let your inner critic come out. This is not meant to be a masterpiece. Once you have come to a stopping point. Grab a journal and begin to dissect your drawing like you would if you were reading tea leaves or wax. Look for shapes that you might find recognizable. What impressions does this drawing give you? Can you make any connection between these shapes and your emotional responses towards them?
Write all of these feelings down, and begin to explore what comes up. If you find something that brings up strong emotions, follow that trail. See why. Continue this process until you are satisfied with the answers you’ve found. If you need to do another drawing, go for it. This can lead you further down the rabbit hole.
I feel that it's important to be said, but shadow work is something that is not meant to be done on active trauma. If you are facing any very strong emotional difficulties, approach this type of work with caution. It can bring up things you might not be equipped to handle at the present moment. Always seek the advice of a trained counselor or therapist before trying to tackle any very painful emotions or situations.
